San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest continuously used cathedral in America. The first cornerstone for the church was put in place by 15 families in 1738 in what is now the heart of downtown San Antonio. It's a stone's throw from city hall. The church was built in 1731 at what is considered the center of San Antonio, a spot chosen by colonists sent there by King Philip of Spain. The Cathedral is filled with history and troubled times, including a flood in 1819 and a fire in 1828 which destroyed the building.
